World Health Organization Faces Significant Staff Reduction After United States Financial Withdrawal
The international public health agency disclosed intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a quarter – amounting to more than 2,000 jobs – by the middle of 2026.
Funding Crisis Prompts Major Restructuring
The decision follows after the US, previously the organization's largest contributor, withdrew financial support earlier this period.
The US government had been contributing approximately 18% of the organization's overall funding, creating a substantial financial shortfall.
Expected Staff Cuts
According to internal projections, the staff will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.
This reduction of 2,371 positions comprises staff reductions, employees retiring, and regular departures.
"This year was one of the toughest in our existence, as we undertook a painful but essential process of prioritization and restructuring," stated the agency's director-general.
Budget Gap Persists
This Geneva-based organization currently faces a budget gap of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming period, representing almost a fourth of its total budget.
The figure represents an improvement from a prior estimated gap of $1.7bn noted in spring.
Not Included Finances
These budget projections exclude a further $1.1bn in expected contributions from current discussions with multiple contributors.
The spokesperson for the organization noted that the present unsecured portion of the biennial budget is actually lower than in earlier years, crediting this to several reasons:
- A smaller overall budget
- Initiation of a new fundraising effort
- An increase in member states' mandatory fees
The restructuring initiative is now approaching its completion, paving the way for the agency to progress with a renewed operational model.
