Woman Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Assault Dies
A woman who was stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop within Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, charged over the violent incident.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the victim's passing the charge has been updated to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, opposite the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, described paramedic and police activity after completing her work period around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as extremely disorderly, adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, take the tram... our security is compromised fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came the city fairly regularly to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... and to think a totally random act occurred, you know, it's horrible."
