Wealthy UK parents are increasingly looking to private institutions in continental Europe as rising private school fees push them to pursue more affordable alternatives overseas.

Rising Interest from British Parents

German establishments have observed a noticeable surge in inquiries from British parents who are facing increased tuition at home, following the imposition of a 20% VAT on independent schooling by the current government.

"We've been overwhelmed with inquiries," stated the director of a northern German private institution. "The British market has always been our biggest competitor. We offer a highly reasonable fee structure compared with UK schools."

This institution, which operates as a nonprofit, charges €12,500 per year for early learning to high school costs of up to €18,700 annually.

Financial Effect of the VAT Change

The addition of VAT to school fees was a primary policy promise by the Labour party. Officials claimed the revenue would be used in part to employ an additional educators for public education.

According to a latest census, the number of Italian children at British independent institutions with families living in the UK fell by 13% this year.

However, the number of US students with families living in the UK increased from 4,367 to 4,728 over the last year. Those from Chinese families also increased from 4,551 to 4,701.

"The introduction of VAT on private school fees has encouraged many families to reevaluate the benefits they are getting from Britain's schooling," commented the director of admissions at a prestigious private institution. "Legacy-wise, people were just automatically enrolling their kids to the very same school they attended, but now there is more variety available."
