Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
