Caelan Doris Makes Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected captain Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new player in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team will play Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen as the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and veteran Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is poised to deputise for Doris if the skipper fails to recover fitness in time to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
